"For many years, we have been fighting for the introduction of a tax on financial transactions. Despite the many reservations this idea has met with, the adoption of this resolution by a large majority is an important step. By encouraging the taxing of financial transactions internationally and, in any case, by recommending the creation of such a tax within the European Union, Parliament is laying the foundation of a new global financial order. On top of this, we should mention the new financial prospects that such a tax would offer, since its introduction could generate some EUR 200 billion per year. This vote is a great victory; it is now up to the international bodies to be as bold as the Members of the European Parliament have been."@en1
