"I welcome the European Parliament’s support for the introduction of a tax on financial transactions at European level during the vote in plenary. A tax on financial transactions at European level will penalise highly speculative and socially useless financial transactions, while providing the European Union with an annual income of EUR 200 billion. This vote goes against the competitiveness pact. Rather than penalising States and citizens, we need to tax the financial markets. The Commission and the Council must urgently take note of this."@en1
