"Madam President, today is a very significant day to talk about equality between men and women because we are celebrating International Women’s Day, remembering those who fought for women’s working and economic rights and their right to vote 100 years ago. We have made considerable progress in those 100 years, but much remains to be done. True equality is still a dream and discrimination against women is a fact of life. I believe that every one of us, both men and women, can do a lot more to achieve true emancipation for women. There are many women in the world whose right to life is being threatened, whose dignity is being violated, and whose freedom is being denied. Allow me, on this International Women’s Day, to demonstrate my support and hope to all women fighting for their democratic rights in the revolution in North Africa. Women cannot be worth half what men are in Arab counties or anywhere in the world. We are worth the same and deserve the same. I will continue fighting to achieve that equality and International Women’s Day will continue to exist until it is achieved. Even if there are many who do not want to see it, the reality is that there are women who earn half of what men do and that domestic violence mainly affects women and children. I must repeat that these facts must continue to be reported in Parliament, and I promise to continue working toward that, of course."@en1
