"Mr President, the deficit of vegetable proteins from protein crops in Europe is another example of the inequalities created by the agricultural and trade policies in force. This dependence has direct consequences in terms of the security and quality of Europeans’ food supply, and has been causing a worrying increase in the vulnerability of livestock producers to volatility in the price of feed. We need to adopt a series of measures that incentivise the production of protein crops, in particular, committing to local production with short supply chains, so as to overcome the current deficit and gradually scale back imports.
These measures could include specific support for
crop rotation systems, agricultural extension services, and research and development. However, this problem cannot be a pretext for creating other, larger ones.
