Increased average life expectancy and the inversion of the population pyramid in Europe present significant challenges for a society that is ageing, and will have to ensure adequate living conditions for its older people and a role that, in many cases, can and should be active. However, faced with the real threat of the collapse in traditional pension systems, the Member States must, bravely and head-on, adopt the necessary measures to save their social security systems, which do not just involve raising the retirement age. However, emphasis must be placed immediately on modernisation, with the possibility of mixed models. This will ensure that those entering the system now can freely choose which model they want to protect them in their old age."@en1
