It reaffirms the main aim of pensions: to guarantee social cohesion in a spirit of equity between generations. In a context of demographic change and economic crisis, pensions must remain a fundamental part of our social pact. Nevertheless, I wish to make it clear that each Member State is free to organise its own pension system and that the European Union is there to simply facilitate coordination between the States."@en1
