"In the EU we have 23 million small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), equivalent to 99% of all companies and more than 100 million jobs. These make a crucial contribution to economic growth, social cohesion and job creation, provide an important source of innovation, and are vital for maintaining and expanding employment.
However, they lack choice when it comes to accessing finance and this is a major obstacle to their creation and growth. The current financial and economic crisis is exacerbating the problem. In the light of the Europe 2020 Strategy, a significant increase in financing for innovative financial instruments in the EU budget is therefore crucial, in order to satisfy SMEs’ financial requirements."@en1
