"The opportunities for selling falsified medicinal products have increased rapidly in recent years. The ever-increasing risk of these medicines entering the supply chain means there is an urgent need to update the legislation. In particular, regulation of sales on the Internet is notoriously difficult and can only be tackled effectively at international level. This issue was not addressed in the Commission's proposal, and the work of the ENVI committee has therefore substantially improved it by adding important safeguards for consumers who purchase medicines online. But the nature of the Internet means that we cannot eliminate the risk. Consumer awareness of this risk needs to be improved, and so I welcome the inclusion of awareness-raising campaigns for the public which has been agreed as part of the compromise. The Commission is in a unique position to coordinate education campaigns for the public and must ensure that the Member States fulfil their obligations in this regard."@en1
