"The report in question on the prevention of the entry into the supply chain of medicinal products which are falsified highlights an important element of concern for the European public, namely the quality and safety of the medicines they use. Therefore, I welcome the provisions that will make it possible to combat the phenomenon of falsified medicines and which represent a necessary step towards responding to this rising public health threat and ensuring patients’ safety. After some six months of negotiations, the agreement reached between Parliament and the Council is certainly an improvement on the existing regulatory system. More specifically, it regulates the sale of medicines over the Internet, which is one of the main channels through which falsified medicines enter the EU market. In fact, in order to operate, online pharmacies in Member States must obtain special permits to supply products to the public over the Internet. Lastly, because I believe that the falsification of medicines should not be viewed as a minor offence – we need only think of the implications of falsifying life-saving drugs – but rather as criminal activity that endangers human lives, I fully support the strengthening of sanctions."@en1
