"Mr President, this really is a rather complex issue. Based on the information provided, it is clear that there is a problem. I would definitely agree with my colleague who said previously that this is not just a Bulgarian issue. It is a question of certain values, European Union values, recognised values and we must all respect anyone who is participating in the debate here in this Chamber.
There is a certain charter in the European Union called the Charter of Fundamental Rights. Bulgaria, Lithuania, which I myself represent today, and the other European Union Member States must all comply with it. It clearly defines what we can and cannot do, and what government can and cannot do. However, the fundamental idea is to respect human rights. Commissioner, I therefore feel that the representative of the Commission really should follow this case very closely, because the tension felt in this Chamber today is still excessive."@en1
