"The EU and Member States face one of their biggest challenges with regard to ensuring adequate and sustainable pension systems in Europe. Given that a large percentage of citizens are highly dependent on their pension schemes for their livelihood, I would like to emphasise the importance of the state-financed pension schemes based on the principle of solidarity. In multifaceted situations with various traditions and types of pension scheme, and given that the main responsibility for pension reform rests within the remit of Member States, it is impossible to apply the principle of one-size-fits-all. The EU can, however, add value by providing coordination between the various pension schemes and sharing best practice. Any review of pension systems should be carried out in a transparent way, protecting consumers’ needs and informing citizens of their rights with regard to the various pension schemes and the risks involved, especially those related to cross-border mobility. Pension systems should be able to withstand any potential budgetary and demographic pressures on Member States without putting undue pressure on ordinary citizens. All this needs to be addressed through the prism of the demographic and socio-economic challenges of the future, such as the development of atypical employment, a growing female labour force, changes in family structures, and youth unemployment."@en1
