"More than 20 years ago now, the European Commission proposed creating a single European patent as soon as possible, and emphasised the pressing need for such a patent. At the moment, patents in Europe have to be approved country by country, and they have to be translated each time into the relevant national language. In order to get a patent approved in just half of the EU Member States, it is necessary to pay up to EUR 20 000, of which EUR 14 000 is for translation. In the United States, around EUR 1 850 suffices. The lack of a European patent hinders our competitiveness, as well as European innovation, research and development. This is why enhanced cooperation is fully justified on this subject, which is fundamental for the future of the EU."@en1
