"The creation of unitary patent protection in the European Union is an essential part of developing innovations and improving competitiveness. I supported this resolution, which will authorise enhanced cooperation between the Member States in the area of the creation of unitary patent protection. Hitherto, there has been a fragmented patent system in the European Union, caused by the high costs and complexity of validating patents in individual Member States. Although more than nine Member States have indicated their intention to establish enhanced cooperation between themselves in the area of the creation of unitary patent protection, the Commission and the Member States participating should promote the participation of as many Member States as possible. Enhanced cooperation would facilitate the proper functioning of the internal market and would eliminate obstacles to the free movement of goods, which would increase the number of inventors and would provide access to unitary patent protection throughout the EU."@en1
