"My abstention in the vote on the report regarding the agreement between the European Union and the Federative Republic of Brazil on short-term visa waiver for holders of ordinary passports expresses a position that goes beyond the scope of the matter.
I do not approve of the conduct of the Brazilian Government in the Cesare Battisti case. Extradition –procedures for which are defined in a bilateral agreement – should have been granted. The interpretation provided by the judicial authorities violates the commitments undertaken. The sentence –which Mr Battisti should serve in Italy – was handed down by an ordinary judge, applying ordinary laws to a common crime: mass murder. It is difficult to support international relations, such as those defined in the reports voted on by Parliament, with a country that does not respect agreements and which, above all, takes a stand on the fundamental right to the protection of life."@en1
