"During the last part-session in Strasbourg, the Commission took the floor in the debate in response to the oral questions from the House on the waste crisis in Campania. I was pleased with the exchange of views with the European Commissioner for the Environment, Mr Potočnik, who showed particular sensitivity over the case of Campania.
The impact of the waste crisis on the tourism sector is extremely bad, as shown by alarming figures recently published by the tourism organisations. The situation has damaged not only the transport companies but also small and medium-sized businesses and the hotel and catering facilities in the region. The impact on employment in the sector is liable to get even worse if appropriate action is not taken urgently. The Italian authorities have already provided the Commission with a plan to restore legality. The policies currently being implemented are aimed not only at cleaning up the regional capital but, above all, at organising an integrated waste system involving separate collection, a reduction in the waste produced, the construction of modern facilities and the restoration of former landfill sites. I am looking forward to a swift and definitive solution to the problem of waste disposal so as to protect both Italy’s image and the tourist economy."@en1
