"Since the financial markets were hit hard by the crisis, it is important to restore confidence, which is largely happening through the role to be performed by the supervisory authorities, which have to exercise their mandate with competence and efficiency in order to signal the necessary confidence to investors and companies. It is in this context that the European Securities and Markets Authority has been created, which, while not claiming to replace national supervisory agencies, will have an important part to play in the new European supervisory framework. Therefore, it is important that this agency starts to operate soon. I vote in favour of the choice of Mr Steven J. Maijoor as the first Chair of the European Securities and Markets Authority in the hope of an active, attentive and successful mandate."@en1
