"Bananas are the world’s fourth most important crop, after rice, wheat and maize, and make a major contribution to food security. In December 2009, the European Union, a group of Latin American countries and the United States reached an agreement on the EU’s tariffs on banana imports. Conclusion of this agreement brought to a close one of the most protracted disputes in the multilateral trading system’s recent history. EU banana import policies had recently been the subject of a decade-long row at the World Trade Organisation, pitting the EU against several Latin American banana producers and the US. We cannot ignore the possibility, however, that the tariff changes resulting from implementation of the agreement will have a negative impact on the livelihoods of the Union’s own banana producers. I therefore call on the Commission to ensure that a serious, independent impact assessment is conducted in the coming months to check for any negative effects and the consequences of the entry into force of the agreement for EU banana producers. It should also perhaps revise upwards the aid measures foreseen under POSEI (Programme of Options Specifically Relating to Remoteness and Insularity)."@en1
