"The Commission proposal includes no less than four separate financing instruments. They are aimed at different market sectors. For each one of them there are justifications that sound credible. However, taken together they are all aimed at the same thing. The intention is to advance and promote the political and foreign policy agenda of the European Commission. Even Trade Commissioner Mr De Gucht in the debate admits ‘...they do support a whole range of EU policy objectives including trade, and allow us to remain relevant as foreign policy actors’. And we know by now who is paying for all of this. The hard-pressed taxpayer and obviously and as usual the British taxpayer – disproportionately. The cost of all this, despite our best efforts, is unknown. Once again the Commission are being profligate and irresponsible with other people’s money. That is why we did not support either proposal and abstained."@en1
