"Mr President, we are about to take the decision to allocate EUR 1 billion to the expansion of energy infrastructure in the European Union. Spending public money on energy matters only makes sense if it helps us meet security demands. The European Union’s energy security depends on a broad diversification, which presupposes not only new transmission routes, but also access to new sources of fuels. Otherwise we will repeat the mistakes made in the TEN-T programme, which has claimed that projects such as Nord Stream are European. We do not need any more new ways to pump more of the same Russian fuel onto the European market. If we repeat the same old mistakes, our EUR 1 billion will only buy us the pretence of a market and competition."@en1
