"My decision to vote in favour of the report on Alzheimer’s disease stems from a desire to improve the current European strategy for combating the disease. The progressive ageing of the European population is being accompanied by a substantial increase in the number of people suffering from neurodegenerative diseases, 50% of which turn out to be Alzheimer’s disease. Therefore, this report is a step forward in the fight against this serious disease. I think that in this matter, it is vital to focus on prevention, in terms of both early diagnosis and the gathering of epidemiological data. It is also necessary to fill the gaps that still exist in such areas as professional training and support for families, by raising public awareness of what living with dementia entails."@en1
