"Adopting this report on a European initiative on Alzheimer’s disease marks an important step in the battle against this disease at a time when the number of people in Europe suffering from dementia is 9.9 million, with Alzheimer’s patients accounting for the majority of them. Adopting this report will allow Member States to take coordinated measures to combat this disease in the European Union. I think that one possible solution is to leverage the resources of the flagship initiative ‘Innovation Union’ in the Europe 2020 strategy and of the pilot ‘European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing’, which is due to be launched this spring. Given the anticipated dramatic increase in the number of Alzheimer’s patients by 2020, there is a need in the future to develop partnerships between public institutions, and between private and public institutions in the process of implementing research projects, thereby harnessing facilities, resources and experience in the private and public sectors to combat the effects of Alzheimer’s and of other types of dementia."@en1
