"Mr President, you cut the honourable Member off just when he was saying something nice about me, for which I thank him.
Regarding the first part of his intervention, we do not have the means – and it is not our priority now – to explore, or support the exploration of, other sources of energy in Europe. Our priority in terms of infrastructure is to establish interconnections, because that has a critical European dimension.
We are going to make proposals on that matter to the European Council. Something has been achieved already – for instance BEMIP, the Baltic Energy Market Interconnection Plan, for the Baltic countries. Now we are working also with Central and Eastern European countries to establish, if possible, North-South interconnections, and things are going well. I have just been to Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan in connection with work on the Southern Gas Corridor, a new potential means of bringing energy – in this case gas – to Europe. This is where I believe the European Union can make some investments in energy infrastructures."@en1
