"Traditionally, the plenary session in December is partly devoted to human rights. One of the ritual events that punctuate the session, apart from the awarding of the Sakharov Prize, is the adoption of the resolution on Parliament’s annual report on human rights in the world and the European Union’s policy on the matter. One of the Union’s international commitments is indeed to promote democracy and human rights around the world. The report this year notes the continuation of grave violations in this area and a situation aggravated by the economic crisis, climate change, new technologies and the fight against terrorism. It recommends that the objectives of the Treaty of Lisbon be implemented, in particular, through the new European External Action Service. Mrs Andrikienė, rapporteur of the text, states that the priority of a consistent European foreign policy should be to promote democracy and human rights."@en1
