"I voted for the report on a new strategy for Afghanistan. I believe that international aid should be channelled directly to the Afghan authorities, thereby circumventing intermediaries. Regarding the peace process, the EU’s role should allow the Karzai government to be autonomous in choosing its dialogue partners, while insisting on the following prerequisites: banishing al-Qaeda, eradicating poppy cultivation, and a willingness to establish basic respect for fundamental human rights. As for the professional training of the police force, I agree with the objectives of focusing not just on increasing the number of police officers and soldiers, but mainly on training, on organisation, and on the relations of police forces with parallel judicial institutions."@en1
