"I voted in favour of the report on the impact of advertising on consumer behaviour because I am in agreement with the rapporteur that, in the digital era, advertising has taken on a new dimension which necessitates – as the rapporteur has recommended – the implementation of an EU website labelling system modelled on the European Privacy Seal, certifying a site’s compliance with the data protection laws. Consumers need to have information which is clear, non-manipulative and objective in order to be able to make intelligent decisions. Sophisticated and aggressive marketing techniques have over the years prevented consumers from making informed choices with regard to goods and services. This is especially so with regard to citizens who are particularly vulnerable, such as children. We need to have a more disciplined approach which truly safeguards citizens’ interests."@en1
