"I voted in favour of this report on the impact of advertising on consumer behaviour. Indeed, considering the influence that advertising exercises on consumers and the economy, it is more necessary than ever to take action to prevent certain unfair advertising practices from influencing and conditioning commercial choices. The spread of new systems of communication, such as the Internet, mean that even greater attention must be paid to consumers and in particular to more vulnerable sections of society, such as children and adolescents. It is our duty to combat the spread of untruthful and misleading information and above all certain practices, such as mail spam, which invades the private lives of users and their privacy. I agree with the rapporteur, Mr Juvin, when he calls for action to be focused on the suppression of unfair advertising practices by broadening the scope of the directive in force. I believe that the measure we have voted on today offers an appropriate balance between freedom of expression and consumer protection."@en1
