"Madam President, ladies and gentlemen, procedure is the stuff of democracy and therefore the implementation of the citizens’ initiative was not merely a technical exercise but imposed crucial choices that made it possible to turn the citizens’ initiative into an instrument effectively capable of helping to build a genuine European political space. Parliament undoubtedly exercised its prerogatives in an exemplary manner, significantly improving the original proposal. The main results have already mentioned and I do not need to remind you of them. I would, however, like to emphasise another one, to which our group made a significant contribution: European political parties will also be able to promote a citizens’ initiative. This is an outcome of great significance because the fate of European democracy lies at its heart, since there can be no genuine international democracy until European political parties take on an effective role in the democratic process. Today we are taking a step forward in this direction and this is another reason why it is a great day for European democracy."@en1
