"Trafficking in human beings affects many hundreds of people every day in Europe, most of them women and young girls. There was an urgent need, therefore, to plug the legal gap that exists in some European countries, such as Spain, where, incidentally, the largest brothel has just opened a few kilometres from the French border. Hence, the European Union has finally equipped itself with an instrument for creating an environment that deters traffickers, and for making sure that trafficking victims are given assistance and protection. From now on, common rules will define the offences and penalties applicable to traffickers. This marks a further step towards the protection of human dignity and an end to human beings being treated as commodities."@en1
