"Mr President, achieving a high degree of energy efficiency is the fundamental political aim of the European Union, as it is an integral component in the overall strategy of building a competitive, low carbon economy which will stimulate business activity and improve employment by creating plenty of new jobs. With tomorrow’s vote on the energy efficiency plan, the European Parliament will send a strong signal to the Commission and the Council on the need for urgent and targeted measures in this area.
In the first place, I call upon the European Commission to conduct a thorough analysis of the effectiveness of existing legislation on the renewal of the current housing stock and higher energy standards for new builds. Creating an effective energy infrastructure and developing modern technologies for vehicles are other important priorities which I hope will be part of the Commission’s proposed new energy efficiency plan for 2011.
In conclusion, I would say that energy efficiency has the potential to, and must, become a profitable business. It can do this on its own and produce a high social return."@en1
