"Mr President, this morning, I received an email invitation to a cocktail party from the secretariat of the Committee on Budgets. They wanted to celebrate the fact that the European Parliament was able to increase its budget for 2011. If it were up to this Parliament and the Commission, a lot more money would have been taken out of our citizens’ pockets. European taxes: a reason for a celebratory cocktail! Member States losing their right to veto the budget: another reason for a party! Mr President, I call that dancing on the grave of citizens’ rights! Fortunately, though, there is a cause for celebration. The budget increase has been capped, after heavy pressure from Member States. Unfortunately, this still means no reduction, which is what the Dutch Freedom Party (PVV) wanted, but the increase is not nearly as high as this House wanted. We will not have any European taxes, to the anger of the Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament and the Group of the European People’s Party (Christian Democrats), and Member States will retain their right of veto. So, when I raise a glass today, then it will be to those courageous, stubborn Member States, like the Netherlands, that have refused to agree to this Parliament’s demands. Long live Member States, long live citizens!"@en1
