"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, for more than a month, a group of 250 people, including 80 Eritreans, have been held hostage by traffickers in the Sinai Desert in Egypt. Part of this group had previously been turned away from the coasts of some European countries. The kidnappers are demanding USD 8 000 ransom for their release and, in the meantime, are subjecting them to the most atrocious forms of abuse and deprivation. Six people have already died, and rumours are also circulating about the removal of organs to be sold on the black market. It is time for the international community and the European Union to say ‘Enough!’; it is time for some straight talking about the guarantee of the right to asylum everywhere; and it is time for some governments to reconsider their illusory return policies. The Pope has asked for this, and so too have foundations, associations and political figures. We call on you, Mr President, together with Commissioner Ashton, to take immediate action to stop this ordeal."@en1
