"We are currently in a state of deadlock which actually extends beyond the 2011 budgetary procedure. This is a delicate juncture which will determine the future of the Union and provide a precedent for future budgetary procedures and the role that the European Parliament will play. Parliament’s grievances are not ridiculous. All we want in practical terms is for the role which Parliament has been assigned by the treaty to be respected. Parliament has made a great many concessions during these negotiations and we are still being asked to make many others. However, I hope that we will get through this period and that we will be able to vote for the new budget during the December sitting."@en1
