That is the situation we sought, and that is the truth. Now there is an opportunity to grow. Centralised power and monetary policy did not work in the Soviet Union and they will not work in the West either. There is no single currency; there is only taxpayers’ money in different parts of Europe. While national budgets are being cut at the same time – in Finland they could not even find EUR 1 million for a hospital for rheumatic diseases – my voters at least – and there were 130 000 of them – do not want me to be the EU’s representative in Finland, but the Finnish taxpayer’s representative in the EU, and that is what I intend to be. Nothing comes of a centralised policy. First Greece fell, now Ireland is falling, and behind them are Portugal and Spain. The exercise will soon be over."@en1
