In 2003, negotiations were started on a future scientific and technological cooperation agreement, which resulted in the draft text on which we have just voted. We cannot forget that this partnership could be of the utmost benefit to Europe, as Japan is one of the world’s leading countries in terms of research investment, which amounted to 3.61% of gross domestic product in 2008, with more than 81.6% of that coming from the private sector.
