"Mr President, I abstained from the vote because I am not convinced that Member State subsidiarity is respected in the area of family law. The European Union must fully respect the division of powers between the Union and the Member States when creating legislation. For this reason, I fully support an approach which consistently takes account of the various legal approaches and constitutional traditions based on the specific conditions of individual states, particularly in areas relating to the fundamental values of a given society, such as the values embodied in family law legislation.
The aim of the EU approach should be to better understand and secure the needs of all citizens in all states, and not to create some kind of monochrome society. It is therefore essential not to overstep by force the necessary framework of the measure, which might threaten the fundamental values of the Member States in specific areas of civil and family law."@en1
