"Mr President, I would like to welcome the annual report and congratulate President Caldeira and all the Members of the Court for their excellent work. Allow me especially to thank Mr O’Shea for the excellent cooperation we had concerning the agencies. Our role as a parliament is accountability towards the citizens, so we have to make sure that taxpayers’ money is used properly, transparently and effectively. I expect that the findings of the annual reports concerning the agencies, to be published later, will follow the same trend as in recent years. The situation is getting better, but there are still control systems to be improved, problems to be tackled and solutions to be found. In the current major economic and social crisis, the significance of monitoring has become more important than ever before, and we in Parliament and the Court of Auditors are together committed to dealing with, and solving, the problems in order to achieve even better results."@en1
