"I would like to begin by congratulating Commissioner Barnier on the presentation of this important document. As it diagnosed, the impact of the crisis that we are currently experiencing is making itself felt in all sectors of our society and economy, causing dismay and distrust of the single market among the public.
However, this very single market is one of Europe’s greatest weapons for combating the current crisis. We therefore warmly welcome this communication, which shows new ambition for single market policies, allowing us to restore confidence in our social market economy model. In the current situation, the European Union should pay particular attention to its 20 million small and medium-sized enterprises. Given this, one of the EU’s priorities should be to create mechanisms that solve the problem of access to credit for these companies.
We would also like to highlight the Commission’s proposal to evaluate the Small Business Act by the end of 2010, so as to make life easier for these companies, especially by simplifying bureaucratic and tax matters, and placing greater emphasis on social responsibility. We hope that the 50 measures tabled here can contribute to further developing the internal market and taking full advantage of it, as it may prove a source of extra growth for the European economy."@en1
