"At a time of great mobility, we cannot enjoy security without an efficient exchange of data. It is our duty to protect our citizens against terrorist attacks and organised crime. However, a balance needs to be found between security and privacy. I welcome the fact that the European Parliament’s resolution emphasises that PNR data cannot be used for profiling. I believe that the partnership between the US, Canada and Australia, on the one hand, and the European Union, on the other, can offer the ideal solution for combating terrorism and organised crime.
I think that both sides need, first of all, to find common ground on understanding what is involved in achieving this objective. We must bear in mind that Europeans, by their very mentality, attach particular importance to respect for their privacy. The EU cannot give its consent to this until every detail pertaining to the security of the data being transferred between the parties involved is clarified."@en1
