"I voted against my colleague’s report, despite the fact that we are from the same group and despite the fact that he managed to include several positive points in his report. Unfortunately, however, the forces of the European right managed, through the amendments which they tabled, to alter the content and tenet which he was trying to give to his report. I could not vote in favour of the report when, apart from anything else, it deplores as ‘protectionist’ the measures taken by Argentina to deal with the financial crisis and, on that basis, indirectly asks the Commission to impose sanctions, calling on it to ‘regularly address the issue of market access with countries in Latin America’. I could not overlook the supremacy of the ‘rules of the market’ and of European interventionism in the internal affairs of other countries, especially against measures that support cohesion and protect the citizens in those countries. Trade and relations between the EU and the countries of Latin America must be based on equality, solidarity and respect for workers’ rights and the environment and must not allow the interests of the strongest states and companies to prevail."@en1
