"The objectives set by the Lisbon Strategy – creating more jobs and eradicating poverty by 2010 – have not been achieved. This is why Europe must continue its efforts to achieve them. I believe that the European Union and Member States must focus particular attention on lifelong learning programmes. They offer a means of combating poverty and social exclusion and help consolidate employability and the ability for labour market integration. On the other hand, I think that the European executive should analyse the areas where there is a growing shortage of qualified staff in order to be able to promote measures in the future for plugging this deficit. One possible measure would also be to extend the Erasmus programme, currently intended for students, to other socio-professional groups as well, such as young people without university qualifications or unemployed people included in professional retraining programmes."@en1
