"I am pleased that we are also trying to raise this issue of poverty and social exclusion at the level of the European institutions. That is very important. The resolution which we are to adopt is heading in precisely that direction. It describes the situation very well, but it has been somewhat less successful in finding a solution for it. Minimum income can form one part of that solution, and indeed it already exists, in some form or another, in Member States’ social policies. However, in this material, I have also come across a proposal for a universal basic income or unconditional income for all. That, however, would be questionable, even from the perspective of social entitlement. It is not a good idea for everyone to receive a basic income for a normal life, because we would then have less money for those who are in real need of social assistance.
