"China is, without doubt, a significant trading partner of the European Union and its Member States, and trade relations have deepened in recent years due to the remarkable growth of the Chinese economy.
For future relations between the Union and China, it is important to create a real partnership based on acceptance, but also on shared values. The EU is a worldwide defender of human rights, and it must therefore actively promote its human rights agenda and consistently push for human rights and values to be respected.
I personally believe that, in this area, we should avoid making compromises on the grounds that we might disrupt trade. The EU has a moral obligation to put pressure on the Chinese Government to adopt commitments leading to a dramatic improvement in human rights in the country and, above all, to accept immediately and unconditionally a moratorium on the death penalty, which is still being misused in order to eliminate political opponents in China."@en1
