"It is disturbing to see the Syrian authorities making dictatorial arrests of this kind and persecuting well-known defenders of human rights. The trial of Mr Al-Maleh did not comply with international standards of justice, including the assumption of innocence and the right to a defence. The grant of a pardon to Mr Al-Maleh and other human rights defenders who were not given the right to a proper trial would testify to a change of course in the policy of the authorities and a move towards upholding international standards of human rights and the principles of a fair trial. In addition, the signing of an association agreement between the European Union and Syria, the fundamental feature of which is respect for human rights, was postponed at Syria’s request in October 2009. In relation to the current situation, the European Commission should present a report to the European Parliament on the state of discussions over the signing of that agreement."@en1
