Freedom of expression, freedom of the press and freedom of assembly are extremely restricted in Syria as a result of this. Politically motivated detentions are nothing unusual in Syria, one of the detainees being Mr Al-Maleh. He has already spent several years in prison on account of his involvement in human rights cases.
