"I voted in favour of the joint motion for a resolution on the situation of the Jordan River because all the countries along the river need to be encouraged to restore it. The Lower Jordan River area is entirely spoilt: poor management has resulted in serious pollution, resulting in a 50% loss of biodiversity.
In the Peace Treaty, signed in 1994, Israel and the Kingdom of Jordan agreed to cooperate in the ecological recovery of the River Jordan along the shared borders and to protect its water resources. However, the Palestinians have been excluded from the Israeli security zone established in the West Bank throughout the Lower Jordan River area, which is illegally occupied by Israeli settlers who irrigate the land with water that belongs to the Palestinians.
This means that the Palestinian population in the West Bank is facing serious water shortages, therefore we demand that Israel puts an end to the settlements policy, including in the Lower Jordan River area. The countries along the river must, with the support of the EU, create a Jordan River commission to restore the river in order to guarantee that there is a sufficient volume of water to supply the population that lives along the river."@en1
