"Mr President, Commissioner, the unauthorised, unidentified and unnoticed entry of products from cloned animals into the food chain cannot fail to constitute cause for concern. It is particularly worrying given that this fact reached our attention only a few weeks after Parliament had once again voted in favour of prohibiting these products from being placed on the EU market. At this time, this seems to us to be a correct and fitting precautionary measure.
The EU’s actions in this area should be guided, in the first instance, by the desire to safeguard the public interest, to maintain a high level of protection for human health and ensure food and environmental security by promoting animal welfare. These values should take precedence over any others. If the marketing of these products is authorised in the future, it will also need to respect the principles of transparency, information and consumer choice. Unfortunately, this is not the case today, for instance, with food which is partially composed of genetically modified organisms or animals that have been fed by these organisms."@en1
