"I am very pleased with the compromise on establishing a financial supervision system. The European markets did, indeed, need these mechanisms. Something which I, personally, am very pleased about is the emphasis given to the role of the European Central Bank. We are, I think, safer under the new arrangements. The experience of the European Central Bank allows us to look to the future with optimism, and the establishment of the European system of financial supervision bodies should be treated as a step in the right direction. We have begun in earnest the coordination of policy on spending, and are not interested only in collecting taxes in Europe. The reporting system will be very important. Please remember that national governments, which make decisions and oblige themselves to observe the rules on budget deficit, are not the only body authorised to spend money in their country."@en1
