"− This resolution tackles the vulnerability of older women in the context of the phenomenon of an ageing population in the EU, which is seen as a future burden for national economies, and where the potential of the elderly is often ignored as they are more often seen as passive objects than active subjects. I would stress the particular risk of poverty to which older women are subject, so I agree with incentives to employ older people, for example by compensating employers. However, I do not agree with specific arrangements for older LBT women. With the entry into force of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, prohibition of discrimination for whatever reason has come under the European Union’s legislative jurisdiction. Pursuant to Article 21 of the Charter, ‘Any discrimination based on any ground such as sex, race, colour, ethnic or social origin, genetic features, language, religion or belief, political or any other opinion, membership of a national minority, property, birth, disability, age or sexual orientation shall be prohibited’; meanwhile, Article 25 establishes that ‘The Union recognises and respects the rights of the elderly to lead a life of dignity and independence and to participate in social and cultural life’. I believe that the implementation of these directives will serve to combat any form of discrimination."@en1
