"We need measures designed to create new jobs, especially now when Member States are facing a severe economic and social crisis. Against this background, the EU’s cohesion policy has a crucial role to play in developing the potential for creating new jobs in a sustainable economy by reducing regional differences and creating a society with full employment. We must encourage regions to utilise the Structural Funds for financing national, local and regional projects, as well as the European Social Fund in order create better educational and employment opportunities.
The European Social Fund is the solution available to Member States which want to invest in enhancing skills, providing employment and training activities, professional retraining and careers advice for the unemployed, with the aim of creating more and better jobs. In order to support the communities and regions in Member States, I asked the European Commission to fund a pilot project aimed at providing training and facilitating the exchange of models of best practice for those directly involved in managing and implementing European funds at local and regional level."@en1
