"Madam President, Article 3 of the Treaty of Lisbon gives the European Union responsibility for economic, social and territorial cohesion, and for solidarity between the Member States. That cohesion and, in particular, territorial cohesion, is therefore one of the Union’s main objectives in order to ensure harmonious development and remove regional disparities. The Treaty of Lisbon also mentions supporting the island regions.
I am speaking because the Spanish Government has announced a cut in the subsidy for discounting flights to the Balearic Islands, Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla for residents. In other words, it intends to cut into discounts for residents. Residents of these regions see air travel as essential. It is not optional, but rather they depend on it as it is their only means of contact with the outside world, and therefore maintaining discounts will ensure that those regions have equal opportunities and can compete.
I ask Parliament to support this territorial cohesion and I trust that it will make the Spanish Government reconsider removing these discounts."@en1
